Automatic Art and Design is the studio of Charles Wilkin and was started in Columbus, Ohio in 1994. Automatic now operates in Brooklyn, New York and offers design, illustration and typographic services to a wide range of clients across all media. Wilkin founded Automatic on his belief that personal expression is an integral part of the design process. By blending elements of art, design and commerce together Wilkin is able to relying on instinct rather than expectation as a means to engage the viewer on a more emotive level. This instinctual approach to design has allowed Wilkin to develop a unique and dynamic style that has earned him national and international recognition. In 2003, Wilkin was nominated for a National Communication Design Award from the Copper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York City. That same year he published his first monograph titled Index-A through Die-Gestalten, a 160-page book that showcases his extensive collage, Polaroid and typographic work. Wilkin has taught typography at the Columbus College of Art and Design in Columbus, Ohio as well as lectured around the country. His work was recently added to the permanent collections of the Museum of Decorative Arts, Hamburg, Germany and The Library of Congress in Washington, DC.
